2002 Distinguished Sea Service Award Honoree

At its Centennial Congress in 1990 the Naval Order established a Distinguished Sea Service Award (DSSA) to each year honor a recently retired US Naval Officer who, over a total career so distinguished himself and the Naval Services that he should be singled out as one who stands ” First Among Firsts” . This year’s honoree is:

Admiral Archie Clemins, US Navy  (Ret.)
in recognition of Professional Leadership and Support to the Sea Services of the United States of America reflecting Singular Credit and Honor upon himself and his Country and earning the enduring Gratitude of his fellow Countrymen. He stands ” PRIMUS INTER PRIMOS” .

Admiral Archie Clemins was born in Mt Vernon, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois (Urbana campus) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Commissioned into the United States Navy through the University’s Naval Reserve Officer’s Training Program, he completed the Naval Nuclear Power program and served on a ballistic missile submarine before going back to his alma mater for a Master’s degree.

Returning to the fleet, he served on several attack submarines and commanded the USS POGY (SSN647). Promoted to Flag rank in 1991, he had five follow-on assignments, including Commander, Pacific Fleet Training Command out of San Diego, California and Commander, Seventh Fleet, headquartered in Yokosuka, Japan.   Admiral Clemins concluded his military career in Hawaii as the 28th Commander in Chief of the U. S. Pacific Fleet, the world’s largest combined fleet command. He retired from active duty on 1 December 1999 and currently resides with his wife, Marilyn, in Boise, Idaho.

Archie Clemins is the owner and President of Caribou Technologies, Inc., and co-owner of TableRock International LLC, both international consulting firms concentrating on technology and business development. He is Chairman of Bot Inc., a startup company located in Seattle that focuses on Software Intelligent Agents, and the Vice-Chairman of two additional startup firms: a high-energy electron beam enterprise in Boise and a low-energy electron beam corporation in Boston. Additionally, he serves on the Board of Directors for several businesses and on the Science and Technology Advisory Board for the State of Idaho.  

Well known for his goal oriented teamwork and strong support for the broadband capability of both IT-21 and the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI), Archie Clemins remains a strong advocate for the accelerated use of information technology and the adaptation of the best commercial practices in the military and in government.
