Geert Wilders: “All Over Europe, The Lights Are Slowly Going Out”

Posted: February 14, 2011 in Uncategorized

This popular post was originally published February 8, 2011. reports that there are 4,200 religions in the world, 22 of which are considered to be “major world religions.” Imagine if it were illegal to criticize one of them. Imagine if that religion claimed 1.5 billion members and included a mandatory, oppressive political system along with the duty to wage continual war against those who will not submit to it.

One does not have to imagine this if one lives in The Netherlands. Geert Wilders, a Dutch MP on trial for criticizing Islam, warns that “All over Europe, the lights are slowly going out” because “the ruling elites are defending an ideology that, for 14 centuries, has been trying to destroy us.” Clearly, given the circumstances of this case, the light he is referring to is the illumination of the mind through mankind’s coming to the knowledge of truth through the use of reason.

In layman’s terms, we might ask, is Europe losing its collective mind?

Various leftist news outlets including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), seem anxious to give the public the impression that Geert Wilders is a dealer in hatred, placing the term “hate speech” in headlines with his name. The BBC linked to an article at Expatica which refers to Wilders simply as the “Anti-Islam MP.” Of course, Wilders’ Freedom Party takes positions on many issues beyond matters of this nature, but you wouldn’t know that from leftist media coverage.

As I read Geert Wilders’ speech today, delivered as his trial resumed, I could not help but think of those of us here at NewsReal Blog who speak on these issues every day.

The lights are going out all over Europe. Anyone who thinks or speaks individually is at risk. Freedom loving citizens who criticize Islam, or even merely suggest that there is a relationship between Islam and crime or honour killing, must suffer and are threatened or criminalized. Those who speak the truth are in danger.

The lights are going out all over Europe. Everywhere the Orwellian thought police are at work, on the lookout for thought crimes everywhere, casting the populace back within the confines where it is allowed to think.

This trial is not about me. It is about something much greater. Freedom of speech is not the property of those who happen to belong to the elites of a country. It is an inalienable right, the birthright of our people. For centuries battles have been fought for it, and now it is being sacrificed to please a totalitarian ideology.
